Here's what we are doing! - January 24, 2008
Dear Stanley ,
We did it!
The WISH Act of 2007 will create a crisis support system for the housing needs of children and their families after a disaster strikes.
Thank you for your efforts.
I want to thank you for your help getting Habitat for Humanity-supported legislation passed that will help vulnerable families find housing after disaster strikes. The Kids in Disasters Well-being, Safety, and Health (WISH) Act of 2007 has recently been passed by Congress and signed by the President!
Through the compassion and dedication of Habitat for Humanity supporters like YOU, we were able to mobilize more than 8,500 people to advocate for the WISH Act.
The WISH Act will help create a support system that can respond to the housing needs of children and their families during times of extreme vulnerability.
The WISH Act commission will provide new focus to the housing needs of families after disasters and a new opportunity to enact the housing recovery reforms advocated by Habitat for Humanity:
A flexible menu of housing options that meet the needs and circumstances of families, including allowing families to remain in damaged homes when possible, and using trailers, hotels, apartments, and other options when appropriate;
Community-based recovery efforts that allow more families to remain near their homes, jobs, schools, and support systems; and
A streamlined housing response that ensures families have immediate access to a single point of contact for housing-related services and that all families receive equal access to consistent benefits.
No one can stop natural disasters, but thanks to the hard work of our allies in Congress and Habitat supporters like you, we'll have a strong support system in place to help families recover from one.
The WISH Act represents the true spirit of America. Isn't it amazing what we can accomplish when we work together?
Thank you again for your energy and commitment!
Sincerely,
Jonathan Reckford
